PUHI — Kapa‘a High School boys soccer player Kaulia Shiroma opened, and closed the Warriors’ 4-0 shutout over Kaua‘i High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys soccer series that ended Wednesday at Island School fields where the Voyagers then battled a strong Menehune comeback to a 3-3 stalemate.
The series was originally scheduled to contest on Tuesday. However, due to repairs being done to the Vidinha Stadium track and field facility, and Island School field is not equipped for night contests, the matches were played in the afternoons with Kaua‘i hosting Kapa‘a and Island School hosting Waimea.
Shiroma found the net twice in the Warrior’s victory, announcing the Kapa‘a team in the seventh minute when he scored the opening goal that gave Kapa‘a its 1-0 halftime lead.
That lead stood until late in the contest, when Kapa‘a fired off a series of three goals within a five-minute span for the 4-0 final.
Kamalei Gonsalves broke the ice in the 47th minute, and followed that score with a net in the 50th minute before Shiroma closed the shutout with his goal in the 52nd minute.
Coming off a 1-0 Voyager lead at the break, both the Menehune and Voyagers found the net for a total of five times in the second half resulting in the 3-3 stalemate.
Kainalu Geer scored for the Voyagers twice and Ignacio Elzardia found the net once for Island School.
Menehune scorers included Jacob Grossman, Shayden Ranis-Alameda Dela Cruz, and Haweo Akeo.
The KIF soccer season comes to a close on Saturday when Waimea boys host the Kaua‘i boys at Hanapepe Stadium where the Kapa‘a Junior Varsity Boys take on the JV Menehune at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity Red Raiders meeting the Menehune starting at 11:45 a.m.
Kapa‘a High School will host Island School boys in a single contest starting at 4 p.m. at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
