LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation wrestling tournament director Mac Pigott said when the first matches hit the mat on Saturday, Jan. 14, it was the biggest number of wrestlers having been weighed in, recorded and qualified to wrestle.
“This is a new KIF record for participation,” Pigott said. “Also, the 60 eligible wrestlers participated in 52 matches in 14 different brackets, which made for a long day — five hours of wrestling except for a short bathroom break for the scorers’ table workers. Do you realize that we’ve been wrestling for 10 years now?”
A spectator noted Kaua‘i High fielded more than 30 wrestlers under its young coach, Julian Saldana, who wrestled in college.
Waimea High topped the competition, as the Menehune recorded six first-place finishes, four second-place finishes and one third-place finish in the boys division. Kaua‘i High followed with four first-place finishes, five second-place wins and seven third-place wins. Kapa‘a rounded out the numbers with a pair of first places, a pair of second-place finishes and a pair of fourth-place finishes.
Waimea also topped the girls division wins with a first place and a pair of second-place finishes. Kaua‘i High followed with one first-place finish, two second-place finishes and a third-place finish. Kapa‘a rounded out the medal counts with two first-place finishes.
Some of the notes recorded by Pigott include the fastest pin of the day belonging to Kaua‘i High wrestler Bella Kellerman, who pinned Kailee Brunssen in 25 seconds.
Kobe Lewis, wrestling for Waimea High in the boys 120-pound class, picked up the longest-match honor, and the most points scored during his meeting with Jhann Matthew Cruz that went 6 minutes and 40 seconds into sudden death overtime. The scoring recorded a 19-14 Lewis advantage during the match.
KIF wrestling moves to Bernice Hundley Gym on the Kapa‘a campus on Saturday, Jan. 21, with wrestlers weighing in at 8 a.m., and the first matches starting at 10 a.m.
