Congratulations to Kaua‘i High boys varsity basketball coach Ipo Yoshioka (is that his chicken hekka recipe at the Red Raider food booth?), and Kapa‘a High School boys varsity basketball coach Kamahala Kauhane on directing not one, but two exciting games in a span of just three days.

The contests not only filled the gyms, they brought out the sports greats like Tommy Rita, Art Fujita, and even uncle John Kaneholani (yes, Kaua‘i Police Activities League basketball started Saturday. Did they unlock the bathrooms at the Anahola park?), and how many community basketball program coaches had their teams coming to view, in-person, their respective high school mentors?
The good part of games at the Clem Gomes Gym on the Waimea High campus is the appearance of Garrett Agena (who knew ahead of the Waimea Christmas Parade that he would be the grand marshal?).
Kudos, too, Coach Mac Pigott, on the 10th anniversary of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation wrestling that opened Saturday to a record number of 60 wrestlers (their accompanying fanbase wanted to know where Paradise Grinds was) that had to accomplish 50 bouts before the start of the boys basketball game at the Kaua‘i High gym.
And that doesn’t include the slew of Martin Luther King Day events that are scheduled for the weekend and listed at the Interfaith Round Table of Kaua‘i website. MLK events happen on Monday at The Storybook Theatre of Hawai‘i in Hanapepe, just steps away from the Hanapepe Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji, where Jerry Hirata will be involved in hosting Japanese visitors from Kaua‘i’s sister city of Moriyama.
