WAIMEA — Kaua‘i High School players Jazlyn Corpuz and Hema Naka‘ahiki-Young both bucketed nine points apiece on Wednesday during a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls basketball game against Waimea High School at Clem Gomes Gym.
Chayley Jacobs added a pair of treys in her eight-point contribution in an effort that still fell short, 52-36, against the quick and tough Menehune that spectators described as a “very young team” playing before an audience that was shared by a lot of Menehune taking in the KIF soccer matches taking place at Hanapepe Stadium.
The victory over the Red Raiders came with nine of the 10 Menehune members contributing to the scoring, led by play-making guard Hailey Mata getting nine marks on four buckets and one-half of a charity pair.
Tall post Ari Acosta marked eight along with Shaylen Lea Guerrero, who found a trey in the third quarter. Stephanie Companero finished with seven points dropping in the third quarter where the Menehune shone with 21 points to Kaua‘i’s 12 marks, breaking away from its eight-point halftime lead.
Coming off an 8-2 first quarter showing, the Red Raiders found the 3-ball to fuel a second half where they stayed in the chase, 14-12, behind Jacobs’ pair of treys. But that effort came up short when Waimea’s 14 points were led by Acosta and Tyra Valencia each netting four points with Kiaura Rita-Ortiz and Mata each finding the bucket for the first time for the 22-14 halftime lead.
Waimea next travels to Bernice Hundley Gym on Friday to face the Kapa‘a Warriors in a single contest that tips off at 6:30 p.m.
