Not just once, but a bunch of times, and for quite a while, Sunday off the coast of the Ahukini Landing (nice treat for Padraic Gallagher’s Sunday bike ride) as a pod of whales took advantage of sunny, nearly windless weather to frolic, including several full-blown breaches, in the calm ocean. Jean Souza of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Santuary said they should be announcing the 2023 Ocean Count shortly.

Kudos, Angela Hoover, and all the Girl Scouts on Kaua‘i, on announcing the 2023 Girl Scout cookie sales campaign that started Saturday with the Cookie University (who was going to the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games later in the evening?). Angela said the Girl Scouts can take pre-sale orders immediately, with deliveries coinciding with the arrival of stock on Kaua‘i. For those who have no Girl Scouts to take your order, the Girl Scout cookie finder website at gshawaii.org can help connect you to scouts. There is also a mobile app, or simply wait until booth sales start around mid-February.
More kudos to the Kaua‘i Senior Softball League on launching its 2023 season on Saturday with a short ceremony at the Pat Baniaga Field (having it at Puhi Park would’ve been more convenient with all of the KIF events taking place nearby), and contests being waged at that Hanapepe field and in Kaumakani. Coach Jon Kobayashi said they had to ask permission of the seniors in order to use that field.
