HALEIWA, O‘ahu — Koloa adaptive surfer Eric Lazar finished in second place in the adaptive surfing class at the 50th annual Haleiwa International Open surf meet that wrapped up Jan. 3 at Ali‘i Beach Park on O‘ahu’s North Shore.
HALEIWA, O‘ahu — Koloa adaptive surfer Eric Lazar finished in second place in the adaptive surfing class at the 50th annual Haleiwa International Open surf meet that wrapped up Jan. 3 at Ali‘i Beach Park on O‘ahu’s North Shore.
Lazar dropped to Llywelyn “Sponge” Williams after coming up with a 12.43 total ride after combining his two best heats of four heats at the contest that started on Dec. 26. Williams won the division after posting a two-heat 15.93 to take the division by 3.5 points.
“Adaptive surfers are trying to get more exposure to get recognition for the para Olympics in 2028,” said Lazar after finishing fifth at the ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship held in Pismo Beach, California, in December 2022.
Third place belonged to Benoit Moreau, who posted a 7.67 total over fourth-place finisher Victoria Feige, who finished with 3.83 points in the field of 11 athletes that included Josh Bogle, Ann Yoshida, Buster Kawasaki, Scott Davis, Aaron Paulk and Mike Richards.
Lazar came up short to Williams in his opening heat, dropping to Williams, who scored 7.93 to Lazar’s 7.33. But after scoring solid 5.00 and 5.10 rides in his second and third heats, Lazar came up short in the fourth heat with a 4.83 ride to Williams’ 8.00 ride, according to scores posted on LiveHeats.com.
