Gov. Paul Kanoa (1802-1885) was born in 1802 in South Kona, Hawaii and served as clerk to the governor of Oahu, Mataio Kekuanaoa, prior to being appointed governor of Kauai in 1846 by Kamehameha III.

Monk seals pups milestone for The Marine Mammal Center
KAILUA-KONA — In a sign of hope for the next generation of endangered Hawaiian monk seals and a critical boost to ongoing conservation efforts, researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the first time confirmed that two formerly released patients from The Marine Mammal Center’s hospital in Kailua-Kona, Ke Kai Ola, are now new moms. The news comes as the Center admitted four more seal pups into rehabilitative care and released another seal patient in partnership with NOAA.
State receives funds for forest protection
HONOLULU — The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources will be further protecting forests in the Kohala Mountains on Hawai‘i Island thanks to awards from the federal Bureau of Reclamation (BOR). The BOR has awarded more than $1.9 million to protect forested and wetland habitat from invasive species and replant in riparian corridors.
