PUHI — Due to the critical overcrowding at the shelter, the Kaua‘i Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees for dogs through the end of the year.
The kennels are completely maxed out, and yet dogs keep coming into the shelter, said Nicole Schafer Crane, society executive director.
Adoption appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. The society is short staffed, so Crane is asking for patience from the public as staff works around the clock to find positive outcomes for all animals.
All available dogs can be found at kauaihumane.org/adopting/dogs-available/. The best way to make an appointment is to do so through the website. However, interested adopters may also contact KHS by emailing customerservice@kauaihumane.org or by messaging into Instagram or Facebook @kauaihumanesociety.
Crane said the shelter is beyond full, which puts the animals under a lot of stress.
“We urge the community to adopt or foster during the time,” Crane said.
Fostering is also a way to help if adoption isn’t possible. Short-term fostering is available through the Home for the Holidays promotion, as KHS (and dog parks) will close at 3 p.m. on Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
KHS, dog parks, and BloomingTails thrift shop will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s days. More information on the Home for the Holidays program an be found at kauaihumane.org/about-us/events/home-for-the-holidays/.
Longer-term fostering is needed just as much as adoptions, she said. Interested foster volunteers can call or text the foster phone at 808-631-2844, or email fosters@kauaihumane.org. KHS will supply all food, medical care and supplies to the foster volunteer, and work with the foster to try and find their foster pet a forever home.
