KAPA‘A — Following the first week of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball, Kaua‘i High emerged as the league leader following its sweep over Waimea High in a special Friday night contest at the Clem Gomes Gym that was played to accommodate the Waimea Lighted Parade.
The Red Raiders junior varsity squad posted a 50-33 win over the JV Menehune behind 15-point contributions from Kapono Sullivan and Christian Vito, who marked a trey in the third quarter.
Kaleb Parraga led the JV Menehune effort with eight points, including a pair of bombs from outside the three-point mark. Rhenz Punzalan finished with five points in the fourth quarter, and Diego Mariano also finished with five points.
During the varsity contest, three points separated the Raiders and the Menehune, Kaua‘i High holding the 28-26 lead before the Red Raiders pulled away for a 74-47 win.
Kelani Lewis had the high-point honors for Waimea in the effort on 15 points, including a pair of treys, with Vincent Bostick adding eight points, including a pair from outside the arc.
Cade Myers led the Kaua‘i High win on 22 points, including five bombs from outside the three-point arc. Issac Mirey dropped two distance bombs in his 16-point assist, and Joshua Rego finished with 14 points.
Kaikoa Kanakaole, a sophomore who added seven points to the Warriors’ win, took up a lot of space in the paint, holding the Voyagers at bay and limiting the blue shirts to just three points (by Lukas Myers) in the opening quadrant.
Saturday night, Cade Myers’ brother Lukas Myers, who plays for Island School, finished with a game-high 18 points, including four treys against Kapa‘a High at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
But the Warriors turned to a team effort to outdistance the Voyagers 57-36 behind the contributions of Mikey Questin and Keaka Kauhane, who each finished with 17 points in the win.
Kapa‘a finished with a sweep after its junior varsity Warriors posted a 54-19 win over Island School, led by Austin Green sinking 14 points, including a pair of three-balls. Ty Kamoku added a dozen marks on six buckets, and Emry Piturachsatit ended with 11 points on three long-distance bombs.
Hobey King led the Island School JV effort with eight points, followed by Pico Vaughn adding six points. Kade McCracken dropped the sole Voyager three-point bomb.
Kapa‘a next hosts Waimea boys on Tuesday night, with the junior varsity contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game starting 20 minutes after the JV game. Kaua‘i High visits the Voyagers at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Puhi campus.
