LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High boys varsity basketball team outgunned Kapa‘a 19-12 in the final frame to take a 65-63 edge over the Warriors on Tuesday night during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball game at Kaua‘i High.
Rolling behind the high point by Kaua‘i High junior varsity’s Barkley Gillman’s 14 points, the Red Raider JV boys pulled off a 55-39 win over the JV Warriors, who got four three-balls — one from high scorer Emry Piturachsatit (11 points), one from Austin Green, and a pair from John Kau — to Kaua‘i JV’s sole three-ball from Keanu Perreira-Inouye.
The Kaua‘i High contest was one of four games waged on opening night, where Island School hosted Waimea High, which swept their pair of games over the Voyagers.
The JV Menehune rolled behind high scores from Lokahi Delos Reyes with 23 points and Diego Mariano adding 13 marks, including a trey, in a 63-43 win over the JV Voyagers. The Voyagers were led by Matthew Dobashi with 17 points, and Johnny Primeaux adding 11 points.
In varsity play, Waimea came back from a 23-16 deficit at the break to outgun Island School 23-5 in the final half to eke out the 38-32 win at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus in Puhi.
Similarly at the Kaua‘i High gym, the Red Raiders came back from a 39-27 deficit at the break to outgun Kapa‘a 19-12 in the final frame to capture the win. Mirey led the Raider firepower, netting 16 of his game total 24 points in the second half, including four of his six three-balls.
Boys basketball next plays at Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea on Friday to accommodate the historic Waimea Lighted Parade that takes place Saturday evening. Kaua‘i High visits the Menehune, with the JV contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with the varsity contest starting 20 minutes after the JV game.
Kapa‘a will host Island School on Saturday at Bernice Hundley Gym, with the JV contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m. The varsity boys game will start 20 minutes after the JV game ends.
