Fireworks permit applications available online

LIHU‘E — The window is open for people who wish to purchase a fireworks permit ahead of New Year’s Eve.

Applications are available online through Dec. 30 or until vendors run out of inventory, the Kaua‘i Fire Department said in a statement on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Additionally, the fire department’s Fire Prevention Bureau is encouraging the public to apply for permits before Dec. 26, which is when vendors begin to sell fireworks.

A smartphone or tablet is recommended when applying for a permit because it makes uploading a photo identification easier. To apply for a fireworks permit, people are advised to adhere to the following steps:

• Visit https://connect.kauai.gov and click on “Kaua‘i Fire Department,” and then click on the “Firecracker Permit” icon;

• Create an account or log on to an existing account with username and password;

• Follow the instructions and fill out the application;

• Have a photocopy of identification saved on a device, and then upload it to the application;

• Fire department personnel will review the application once it is submitted;

• The permit will be mailed to the applicant if approved;

• The applicant must print the permit, and then bring it to the county Department of Motor Vehicles and pay a $25 fee. The department will have a dedicated line, which is walk-in only, for applicants. Customers cannot add other transactions.

The Kaua‘i Fire Department will print a permit if an applicant does not have access to a printer. That can be done at fire headquarters, 4444 Rice St., Suite 315, in the Lihu‘e Civic Center.

Payments can be made with cash, check or credit card. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

“Fireworks and firecrackers may only be ignited on private property between 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1,” the fire department said in a statement. “Only licensed pyrotechnicians with proper permits are authorized to ignite aerial fireworks.”

No permit is required to purchase the cylindrical or cone fountains, fountains, snakes, sparklers, toy smoke devices, wheels and ground spinners, whistles and similar products. Aerial luminaries are prohibited.
