HANAPEPE — The Kaua‘i High School girls soccer picked up its second win on Wednesday by defeating Waimea High School 5-0 during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls soccer game played at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Playing in blustery variable winds, the Red Raiders marked its second win following a 1-0 win over Kapa‘a during the KIF season opener that came on a single goal by Kylah Racca, playing the right wing early in the second half.
Waimea, enjoying a 3-1 win over Island School in the season opener, suffered its first loss on Wednesday. Coach Beau Acoba said the Island School victory came off a pair of goals from Team Captain Kendra Knapp, and a single goal from Selah Snowden.
During the Wednesday evening contest, Kaua‘i struck first when Aileah Villatora found the net in the 28th minute to give the Raiders a 1-0 bulge going into the break while both sides battled for ball control midfield in the sometimes-strong blustery wind.
The score stood until the final 12 minutes of play when Kaua‘i found rhythm for a scoring surge when the redshirts poured in three goals within a five-minute span.
The Waimea forces were beat to the ball for most the contest, or slow to react to coach’s calls, giving Sarea Panit the shot in traffic from the left pocket early in the 68th minute.
Three minutes later, Kyrian Yamase, coming in with fresh legs, found the net in the 71st minute followed by Racca netting her second season goal in the 73rd minute.
As the Menehune
reeled in the scoring flurry, Naia Boudreau iced the victory with a net in the 76th minute.
According to the KIF schedule, Kapa‘a girls was scheduled to host Island School girls in a 4 p.m. match at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium on Thursday.
This will be followed by games on Saturday when the boys enter the arena with the girls. Kapa‘a will host Waimea at the BJB stadium with the JV boys kicking off at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity boys meeting at 1:30 p.m., and the varsity girls locking horns starting at 3:30 p.m.
Because Waimea does not have a JV girls team, the Kaua‘i JV girls will meet the Kapa‘a JV girls starting at 11:45 a.m.
The second set of games will have Kaua‘i High School traveling to the Island School campus with the varsity boys kicking off at 2 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 4 p.m.
