LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a High School girls basketball program swept Kaua‘i High School, 34-15 in Junior Varsity, and 85-33 in Varsity to open the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls basketball season on Tuesday night at Kaua‘i High School gym before several hundred fans.
Led by five Lady Warriors firing double-digits, Kyra Horton pointed in all four quarters to finish with 19 points, including a third quarter three-ball to lead the Kapa‘a firepower that saw Kapa‘a net more than 20 points in three of the four periods, while its defense limited Kaua‘i to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.
Red Raider Jadelyn Reynolds led Kaua‘i with six marks in the third period when the Raiders came off the break to net 18 points. Reynolds finished the night with 11 points, including a pair of treys. Jazlyn Corpuz helped the Raiders by firing her five points, including a three-ball in the third quarter.
Other varsity Warriors making their mark included Denise Alfonso, who finished by sinking 10 of her game-total 15 points in the first half, eight coming in the opening stanza when Kapa‘a set the tone by outdistancing the Raiders, 29-5.
Lady Warrior guard Taira Samiano finished with 14 points, Annie Nizo peeled off four three-balls for her dozen marks, and Olivia Malafu put away 11 points in addition to making a mark sealing the inside to the Raiders.
Earlier in the evening, Kapa‘a Junior Varsity took a 34-15 win over the Kaua‘i JV behind a pair of JV players, Kenzie Ka‘aihue Pao Pao, and Alena Abell each firing off eight points, and a pair of JV Warriors, Trinity Guillen and Kaina Hurd, each adding six points apiece.
Kaua‘i JV’s Kailea Sokau-Masulit finished with a game-high 10 points to lead the Red Raider effort.
Kaua‘i next travels to the Clem Gomes Gym on Wednesday to face Waimea High School for the first time this season. Waimea High School does not have a JV team, so there is just one game scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
On Friday, the Kapa‘a girls will travel to the Clem Gomes Gym for another single game with a 6:30 p.m start. This is because the Bernice Hundley Gym will be used for the boys basketball tournament that starts Thursday and continues through Saturday.
