LIHU‘E — Rain couldn’t dampen the excitement of the announcement of the Holiday Recipe Contest that was made during the Monday Pau Hana Market at the Kukui Grove Center.
“Rain or shine, the Holidays bring family, friends, and local foods together,” said Laurie Ho, the Kaua‘i Farm Bureau president. “Rain or shine, people need to eat, and the farmers come out with local fruits and vegetables.”
The Holiday Recipe Contest, enjoying its second outing, celebrates local creativity in using locally-grown Kaua‘i produce during the holidays. The contest is presented by the Kukui Grove Center, the Kaua‘i Farm Bureau, and the Kaua‘i Grown program, and relies on the Pau Hana Market farmers and vendors to have the ingredients needed in the recipe.
Application forms are available by visiting the Information Tent during any of the Pau Hana Markets that start at 3 p.m., Mondays, rain or shine.
December 5 is the deadline to turn in contestant’s application that contains two of the four featured items. This year’s featured products include sweet potatoes, pumpkin or squash, ginger, and lemon and lime that can be used to create recipes for appetizer, main course or soup, and dessert.
The choice of featured ingredients will be available for contestants to pick up on Dec. 12 to allow the contestant to prepare their dish and bring it to the market for judging on Dec. 19. Dishes need to be placed on a designated table no later than the start time for the market, or by 3 p.m. No late entries will be allowed.
A $100 gift certificate is the top prize for the Best Overall Recipe. There will also be $50 gift certificates presented for Best Recipe use of Kaua‘i Grown Ingredients, Best Recipe for Appetizer, Best Recipe for Main Dish, and Best Recipe for Dessert.
