MILILANI, Hawai‘i — Waimea High School quarterback Kameron Apilado rushed for 228 yards on 11 carries to power the Menehune past top-seeded King Kekaulike 45-6 on Saturday in the First Hawaiian Bank Hawai‘i High School Association Division II state championship game at Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium.
MILILANI, Hawai‘i — Waimea High School quarterback Kameron Apilado rushed for 228 yards on 11 carries to power the Menehune past top-seeded King Kekaulike 45-6 on Saturday in the First Hawaiian Bank Hawai‘i High School Association Division II state championship game at Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium.
The win gave Waimea its first state title.
The Menehune got on the scoreboard first with a 22-yard field goal by Haweo Akeo with 4:17 remaining in the first quarter. About 16 seconds later, Mykah Brun returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown. Akeo’s successful extra point made the score 10-0.
King Kekaulike got on the board when Kalelepono Wong connected on a 31-yard touchdown pass to Ahe Sumibcay with 8:24 left in the second quarter. The point after attempt failed.
Waimea answered late in the second quarter when Kaili Arakaki scored on a 1-yard run with 15 seconds remaining. A successful point-after kick by Akeo left the score at 17-6.
The Menehune ground attack dominated the second half, with Apilado scoring on runs of 70 yards in the third quarter and then 85 yards in the fourth quarter.
Aukai Emayo added 1-yard and 6-yard rushing TDs to round out the scoring for Waimea.
