HONOLULU — Rosey Jerves, coach for the Kapa‘a High School cheer squad, said the group’s trip to the Zippy’s Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association 2022 Cheer competition was a success on Tuesday.
While political candidates were wooing votes from their constituents on Election Day, the cheer squads worked to woo points from the panel of judges that met for the state competition held at the SimpliFi Stand Sheriff Arena on the University of Hawai‘i campus.
“Kapa‘a’s first-ever visit to the state competition was a success,” Jerves said. “The Warrior cheer squad finished third in the Coed Division of the state competition.”
Kapa‘a, earning the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title to be eligible for state competition, finished the day’s competition with a final 36.550 points for third place in the Coed division.
The total included a 0.75 point deduction for its overall performances in the Building Skills where it finished with the lowest score of the six teams competing.
The Warriors were tied with the squad from Kalani High School in Tumbling &Jumps, and tied with Iolani, the eventual division winner, and Radford High School in Cheer Totals.
Iolani School finished tops in the Coed Division with 43.900 points, including a 0.75 point deduction, followed Radford High School culling 43.450 points, including a 0.25 point deduction. Kapa‘a finished third with 36.550 points, a full point ahead of Kalani that had no deductions along with Hilo High School who pointed 35.233 points. Kailua rounded out the field on 33.333 points, including a full point deduction.
Moanalua High School topped the All Girl division with 44.200 points, followed by Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama with 40.233 points.
The Kapa‘a team members include Kayana Goias Jerves, Jaylee Souza Yin, Jaedyn Miller, Kassy Ell, Sonya Ell, Lili Noe Jerves, and Dustin Jerves.
The team’s coaching staff is headed by Rosey Jerves, Lani Cummings, Chelsey Alfiler, Jakey De Peralta, and Jackie Souza.
“Now that the HHSAA season for cheer is over, Kapa‘a will enter open rounds and enter to qualify and compete for Nationals January 2023,” Rosey said.
