LIHU‘E — Activity in and around the voter center located in the historic County Building was brisk on Monday, the day before the General Election.
“There was a line when I got there,” a voter said, smiling after accomplishing her in-person voting. “But the Elections crew were good, so the line moved quickly.”
Outside, on the access road connecting Elua Street and Hardy Street, there was a steady stream of cars pausing to deposit completed ballots in the drop box outside the Elections building.
A pair of voters waiting to perform their duty in-person helped some of the voters by depositing their ballots so the motorists did not have to leave their cars.
“I lost my mail-in ballot, so I’m having to do this in-person,” the waiting voter said. “My friend just wants to vote, in-person.”
The deadline for getting the completed mail-in ballots is by 7 p.m. Tuesday in order for the vote to be counted.
Ballots dropped in the mail are not guaranteed to reach the Elections office in time to be counted, so voters are encouraged to drop their completed ballots in any of the drop boxes on the island, including the one located outside the Voter Service Center at the historic County Building annex.
On Monday, special patriotic balloons attached to the drop box attracted attention to its location.
Ballot drop boxes are also located at the Hanalei Neighborhood Center, the Princeville Public Library, the Kilauea Neighborhood Center, the Waipouli Shopping Center, the Koloa Neighborhood Center, the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, the Hanapepe Neighborhood Center, and the Waimea Neighborhood Center.
Completed ballots, must include the voter’s signature, needs to be in the box by 7 p.m. to be counted.
Additionally, in-person voting is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Voter Service Center located in the historic County Building annex.
Election results will be available shortly after the 7 p.m. cutoff, or until the last polling site in the state closes, if there are voters in line at 7 p.m.
