‘OMA‘O — Negotiating a 5K trail run in Halloween costuming is just one of the challenges at the Hilloween 5K Trail Run that takes place Oct. 29 at the ‘Oma‘o multi-use track.
“There are two events for this year,” said Derek Johnson, one of the organizers for the Hilloween fun run. “The 5K Trail Run where the wearing of costumes is strongly encouraged, and the Keiki Trick-or-Treat Run.”
The Hilloween events are fundraisers for the Kaua‘i Ballet Academy Foundation, with all funds providing dance tuition scholarships for youth in need.
“The 5K Trail Run is an exciting off-road course with spooky hills, creepy obstacles and magnificent views of the South Shore of Kaua‘i,” Johnson said. “The course is not longer than 3.1 miles, and the wearing of costumes is strongly encouraged, with prizes given for the best costumes and the fastest times.”
Early registration is encouraged because only the first 100 trail runners are guaranteed a stylish event T-shirts. Registration starts at 7 a.m. on race day, with the event starting at 8 a.m.
The second event, The Keiki Trick-or-Treat Run, is geared for children aged 0 to 12. The Keiki Trick-or-Treat run will start at 9:30 a.m.
“It is a short, easy, off-road course with trick-or-treat stations along the way. All participants will receive a Hilloween tote bag to haul their goodies. Just arrive in costume and be ready to run,” Johnson said.
The Hilloween event is made possible through The Knudsen Trust opening their land to the public for this event coordinated by the Garden Island Motorcycle Club.
The Hilloween is sponsored by The Knudsen Trust, GIMC, CAN, Ghost Longboards, CJM Country Stables, Makana Charters, the Kalaheo Dental Group, Da Booze Shop, Clear Medical, Lawa‘i Market, ‘Ohana Physical Therapy, R.O.C.K. Physical Therapy, Kaua‘i Plumbing, Sunrise Foundation, Jason Carnegie Photography and the Kaua‘i Ballet Academy.
