Lolita ‘Loling’ Pascua Villanueva
Lolita “Loling” Pascua Villanueva, 98, of Kilauea, passed away on Sept. 7, 2022. She was born on April 10, 1924, in the barangay of Toboy in Asingan, Pangasinan, Philippines. A retired cook and beautician, Lolita was a resilient woman who survived the Japanese occupation of the Philippine Islands during World War II. She immigrated to Kaua‘i in 1959 after marrying the love of her life, William. Lolita was an avid game show watcher who enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling, as well as mastering crossword puzzles in her third language.
She was preceded in death by parents German and Margarita Mateo Pascua, son William Edward Villanueva, brother Sergio Mateo Pascua, sisters Genoveva Pascua Macandog, Leonora Pascua Cariazo and Primitiva Pascua Ramirez.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years William Pascua Villanueva, daughters Rose-Marie Morimoto, Theresa Yadao (Joseph), Leah Fe Ho (Ray), sons Walter Villanueva (Shirley), Wendell Villanueva (Jade), 15 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
A service is Friday, Oct. 14, at St. Sylvester Church, 2390 Kolo Road in Kilauea. Visitation begins at 8:30 a.m. and services at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m.
Arlene Evalani Chun
Arlene Evalani Chun, 71, of Kekaha, passed away on Aug. 29, 2022, in West Palm Beach, Florida. She was born on Nov. 28, 1950, in O‘ahu. She retired as a clerk for PMRF.
She was preceded in death by husband Ronald Chun, mother Dora Ingraham, father George Ingraham, mother-in-law Gladys Chun and father-in-law Edward Chun.
She is survived by daughters Ronda Chun of Delray Beach, Florida, Crystal (Michael) Shimatsu of Waimea, Jamie (Bryan) Fandrich of Billings, Montana, son Aaron (Jennifer) Chun of O‘ahu, seven grandchildren, brother Jerome Ingraham of O‘ahu and sister Janice Ingraham of O‘ahu.
A service is Saturday, Oct. 15, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha, with viewing from 9 a.m. and service at 10:30 a.m. A celebration of life to follow at Kekaha Gardens Park on Uliuli St in Kekaha. The family requests aloha attire and kindly omits flowers.
Bessie Duran Garbo
Bessie Duran Garbo, 77, of Honolulu, passed away on Sept. 16, 2022. She was born on Feb. 12, 1945, in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. She retired as a cashier with Whalers General Store.
She was preceded in death by parents Francisco and Mercedes Duran, brother Romulo Duran and brother-in-law Abelardo Iloreta.
She is survived by brothers Artemio (Shanna) Duran, Isabelo (Elisa) Duran, sisters Amelia Iloreta, Avelina (Herbert) Semana, sister-in-law Cora Duran, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Oct. 29, at St. Catherine Church, with visitation from 9 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Norma Costales Bautista
Norma Costales Bautista passed away on Sept. 13, 2022, at home at the age of 81. She was born on Nov. 3, 1940, in the Philippines. She was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by father Adriano Costales, mother Juana Costales, sisters Teodora Matabia, Caridad Sarmiento and brother Virgilio Costales Sr.
She is survived by husband Virgilio V. Bautista Sr., son Virgilio C. Bautista Jr. (Clarissa Reyes) of Kapa‘a, daughters Purita B. Norial (Domingo Norial, Sr.) of Kapa‘a, Virginia B. Batulayan (William Batulayan Jr.) of Kapa‘a, Marita C. Bautista of Kapa‘a, grandchildren Domingo Norial, Jr. (Francine Norial), Norma Norial (Chason Belmonte), Robert Batulayan (Kristy Mollena-Batulayan), Donnamay Norial (James Padre), Vanessa Batulayan (Austin Perez-Jacinto), Vincent Cervantes-Bautista, Mailee Cervantes-Bautista, great-grandchildren Starlee Belmonte, Nikson Belmonte, Jaxson Belmonte and Jolie Norial, sisters Erlinda Valeriano and Rose Balmes, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. Catherines Church in Kapa‘a. Visitation with family is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by Mass. Burial will follow at the Lihu‘e Cemetery. The family request casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Ruth Leilani (Kailikini) Naumu
Ruth Leilani (Kailikini) Naumu, of Lihu‘e, passed away at home on Aug. 26, 2022. She was born on Nov. 27, 1953, in Waimea.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dwayne Naumu, son Garrett Naumu, parents Abraham and Ermine Kailikini Sr. and Janet and Wallace Naumu, siblings Abraham Kailikini Jr. and Pamela and Ernest Dow.
She is survived by her children Tiffany (Debbie) Naumu, Trisha Naumu, Krystal (Daren) Naumu, sister Cynthia (Kailikini) Blair, brothers-in-law Darryl (Caroline) Naumu, Glenn Naumu, grandchildren Brenden, Aleajah and Taytra Naumu and Kelcie and Dayna Ragasa and great-grandchild Camille Ambrose.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Kailikini Family Residence located at 5010 Awawa Rd. Hanapepe, beginning at 11 a.m.

Kuniaki Shimauchi
Kuniaki Shimauchi, 85, passed away on Aug. 19, 2022, in Lihu‘e. He was born on Feb. 9, 1937, in Fukuoka, Japan. He retired from the State of Hawai‘i, DOT Highways Division, Engineer Technician.
He was preceded in death by father Kenzo Shimauchi, mother Ochiye Shimauchi, step-father Yasuhiko Shimauchi, older brother Toshiaki Shimauchi and sister Mineko Shimauchi.
He is survived by wife Lorraine Shimauchi, sons Jason Shimauchi, Ian Shimauchi, daughter Iris Shimauchi, grandsons Tyler, Kyle, Brandon, sister Shizu Shimauchi, brother Hisaaki Shimauchi, sister Koko Shimauchi and brother Jeff Shimauchi.
Private services were held.

George Mukai
George Mukai died peacefully at home on Oct. 2, 2022, at the age of 94. Throughout his life, George was a cultivator of both the land and its people.
For 20 years George coached the tennis team at Kapa‘a High School where the kids fondly called him Grandpa George due to his signature white crown of hair.
After serving in the Korean War, Grandpa George contributed a great deal to the Kaua‘i community that he cherished. Whether it was volunteering at organizations such as; the Kapa‘a Booster club, the PTA, Kapa‘a United Church, UPW, HGEA, and various political campaigns, Grandpa George was a tireless advocate. Grandpa George did organic farming before it became a thing to do, he loved producing award-winning fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Each year Grandpa George looked forward to the Kaua‘i County Fair where he could share his more than 60 varieties of mangoes, avocados, peppers, anthuriums, orchids and more, his thumb was green.
Grandpa George worked at Mahelona Hospital, then he moved to the County where he worked for 3 Administrations at the Kaua‘i County Building Division. George retired as the Building Division Assistant Superintendent. George always believed in the best of each person and he worked hard to be a peace-builder. With his winning smile, tireless can-do energy and the generous sharing of the bounty from his Kapa‘a garden, George gave his all to his family, and to all the causes he dearly believed in.
In retirement, George used his carpentry skills to build affordable rental homes in Kapa‘a and George continued to energetically serve at Mahelona, RSVP, HGEA Retirees, Anthurium Club and various other organizations that were close to his heart.
George is survived by his wife and partner of 67 years Yvonne, sons Wayne and Nelson, daughters Sharleen (Dave) Koide and Christine (Kenneth) Nakamatsu, grandchildren Jason (Jodie) Koide, Janell (Ryan) Najima, Kimberly Ogata, Kurt (Kristine) Nakamatsu, Craig (Ihwa) Nakamatsu, great-grandchildren Elias, Ethan, Claire, and Trevor and brother Richard (Victoria) Mukai. Preceded in death by son Michael and sisters Millie (Albert Lum) and Dorothy (Richard) Ouchi and many dear friends and relatives.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at Kapa‘a United Church of Christ, Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022. Visitation 9 a.m., services 10 a.m., aloha attire.
Hannah Pakaka Ka‘iwi Noblisse
Hannah Pakaka Ka‘iwi Noblisse passed away on Aug. 4, 2022, at the age of 79. She was born on Feb. 13, 1943, in Ko‘olaupoko, O‘ahu. She worked as a security manager at Lihu‘e Airport.
She was preceded in death by mother Hannah Racoma (Kapule), father David Kealoha, sister Hirene (Racoma) Chase, brothers Peter Kealoha, John Kealoha and David Kealoha Jr.
She is survived by daughters Jacqueline (Hoskins) Ornellas, Christina (Hoskins) Aqui, Tonya (Hoskins) and Benny Lagmay, Ronnessa (Noblisse) and Lopaka Searle Jr., and Joy (Noblisse Kawamura) and Ryan Hardwick, sisters Marta Moniz, Mary Blackstad, brother William Racoma Jr., 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. with a Pa‘ina to follow at Anahola Clubhouse from 12 to 4 p.m. Please join us in celebration of a life well remembered.
