KAUMAKANI — There is still time for people to take advantage of the free spay/neuter clinic being offered by the Greater Good Charities Good Fix program.
“Drop-offs are from 7:30 to 10 a.m. while there’s room on Saturday and Sunday,” said a Good Fix technician, who was checking on the number of cats registered for the Friday clinic. “It’s on a first come, first served basis to a maximum capacity of 150 cats on each day.”
Nearly 300 cats were accommodated as of Friday’s registration cut off time at the clinic located at 1 Kaumakani Avenue, or the former G &R Sugar offices.
“We actually had to turn people away, Thursday because we reached capacity,” said Morgan Littlebear of the Good Fix team. “Fortunately, a lot of those people came back early Friday and we were able to take care of them. Friday’s registration count is nearly full with more than 100 cats registered.”
The clinic, being on Kaua‘i for the third time in three years, and for the second time this year, is supported by the Kaua‘i Humane Society, Gay &Robinson, the Kaua‘i Community Cat Project, the County of Kaua‘i, and the Kaua‘i SPCA.
“We couldn’t do this by ourselves,” Littlebear said. “We need all the help they provide to make this happen for the people of Kaua‘i.”
Cats arriving at the clinic must be in functional carriers or traps with a useable door. There is a limit of one cat allowed per carrier.
Additionally, the staff needs to be alerted at the time of drop off if the cat is known to be currently nursing kittens.
Information on when to pick up and written discharge instructions will be provided on drop off.
“This is all free,” Littlebear said. “When the cat is discharged, it will be ear-tipped, have a microchip installed, be current on vaccines, have a flea and tick treatment, and spayed.”
For North Shore residents wishing to take advantage of the spay/neuter clinic, the Kaua‘i SPCA is offering a shuttle service. Cats can be dropped off at 5404 Kalalea View Drive in Anahola between 7 to 8 a.m.
