Gordon James Mattos
Gordon James Mattos, 77, of Kekaha, passed away on Sept. 18, 2022, at home surrounded by his wife and eight children. He was born on Feb. 18, 1945, in Hilo, and graduated from St. Joseph High School. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy before starting his career with the U.S. Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, where he retired with over 51 years of dedicated service.
He was preceded in death by parents John and Mary (Amaral) Mattos and brothers Robert and John “Jippy” Mattos.
He is survived by his wife Adele (Pereira) Mattos, eight children Marlene (Greg) Cieless, John “Scooby” (Joanna) Mattos, Loretta (Joshua) Witmer, Adeline (Julian) Gilliam, Christine (Robbie, Jr.) Silva, Timothy Mattos, Jessica Mattos, Mary (Trisdon) Yadao, 20 grandchildren, brothers Roy (Jill) Mattos, Thomas (Jackie) Mattos, sisters Rosemary Nunogawa, Bernadette Tomas, Sherry (John) Macayan, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are Saturday, Oct. 8, at St. Theresa Church, with visitation from 8 a.m. and Mass to begin promptly at 9 a.m. A private burial service will follow. The family respectfully requests no monetary gifts or flowers.
Adelina Navor Negrillo
Adelina Navor Negrillo passed away on Sept. 25, 2022. She was born on March 13, 1935, in La Union, Philippines.
She was preceded in death by husband Mariano S. Negrillo, parents Elena Espiritu Navor, Agapito (Rachel) Nazareno Navor Sr., brother Juanito (Anacleta) Navor, sisters Paulina (Cresencio) Bumatay, Dariene Navor, son Johnny Navor Negrillo and grandson Ramil Negrillo.
She is survived by brothers Ricardo (Adele) Navor Sr., Agapito (Melissa) Navor Jr., sisters Cecilia Navor, Ululani (Dan) Urwiler, children Rogelio (Mary) Negrillo of the Philippines, Loreta (Avelino) Sibayan of the Philippines, Florentina (Federico) Embernate of Lihu‘e, Leody (Susan) Negrillo of Kapa‘a, Ruben Bogs (Juvy) Negrillo of Lihu‘e, Ronnie (Violy) Negrillo of Lihu‘e, Carineo (Marlyn) Munar of Lihu‘e, daughter-in-law Nida Negrillo, 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
A service is Friday, Oct. 7, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Viewing is from 8 to 10 a.m., services at 10 a.m., and burial to follow.
Kuniaki Shimauchi
Kuniaki Shimauchi, 85, passed away on Aug. 19, 2022, in Lihu‘e. He was born on Feb. 9, 1937, in Fukuoka, Japan. He retired from the State of Hawai‘i, DOT Highways Division, Engineer Technician.
He was preceded in death by father Kenzo Shimauchi, mother Ochiye Shimauchi, step-father Yasuhiko Shimauchi, older brother Toshiaki Shimauchi and sister Mineko Shimauchi.
He is survived by wife Lorraine Shimauchi, sons Jason Shimauchi, Ian Shimauchi, daughter Iris Shimauchi, three grandchildren, sister Shizu Shimauchi, brother Hisaaki Shimauchi, sister Koko Shimauchi and brother Jeff Shimauchi.
Private services were held.
Borthwick Kauai Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
Kuuipo Reiko Shimizu
Kuuipo Reiko Shimizu passed away on Sept. 25, 2022, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 43. She was born on March 19, 1979, at KVMH in Waimea. She was a foster parent with social services.
She was preceded in death by father Allen Tada Shimizu.
She is survived by husband Garrett Higa of Kalaheo, daughter Jezrael Elena Makiko Higa Shimizu of Kalaheo, mother Beatrice Shimizu of Hanapepe, brothers Matthew Shimizu and Corey Shimizu both of Hanapepe, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousin.
A service is Saturday, Nov. 19, at the West Kaua‘i Hongwanji Mission, Hanapepe Temple. Visitation begins at 3 p.m. with fellowship to follow.
Face masks are required in the temple.

Arthur ‘Atta Boa’ Wailani Kahale
Arthur “Atta Boa” Wailani Kahale, 63, of Anahola, passed away at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on Sept. 2, 2022. He was born on May 29, 1959, on Kaua‘i. He retired from construction as a drywaller.
He was preceded in death by parents Charles and Loke Kaliloa Sr. and by adopted grandparents Joseph and Adeline Kahale Sr.
He is survived by sons Emory Kahale-Sugimura, Ian Ka‘ulu Kahale, Kamalei Kahale, Kunane Kahale, daughter Pualilia Kahale, mother of his children Raylene “Cissy” Kahale, two grandchildren, brothers Arthur (Dorothy) Keale, Wayne (Phyllis) Vidinha Sr., Harold (Wendy) Vidinha, Leslie “Chala” Vidinha Sr., Charles (Aloha) Kaliloa Jr., sisters Rose K. Dahle, Katherine “Momi” Kaliloa, Lorrielee “Bobi” (Kenneth) Rapozo, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life is Saturday, Oct. 15, at Prince Kuhio Park with visitation from 10 a.m. and services beginning at 11 a.m. Scattering of ashes to follow.

Esther Kaleialoha Medeiros, 73, of Anahola passed away at her daughter’s home on Oct. 1, 2022. She was born on Jan. 16, 1949, in Anahola. She was a dedicated homemaker.
She was preceded in death by parents Theodore and Rebecca Williams Sr.
She is survived by children Kaleialoha Rena (Christopher Serve) Medeiros, Kala Teddy (Amy Melcher) Medeiros, Dr. Kapua (Joshua Martin) Medeiros, father of her children Frank Albert Medeiros Jr., 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brother Theodore (Patricia Hunter-Williams) Williams Jr., sister Deborah (Leonard) Asano, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Nov. 12, at Ko‘olau Hui‘ia Protestant Church in Anahola. Visitation is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and services to follow.

Irwette Kalua Santiago passed away on Sept. 1, 2022, at home at the age of 68. She was born on March 14, 1954, in Lihu‘e. She was employed by Grayline and Freeman Guard.
She was preceded in death by legal parents Irwin and Elizabeth Cockett, parents Philip and La-Plane Kekahu and son Ronald Kimo O‘Kalani Santiago.
She is survived by husband Ronald James Santiago of Hanapepe, son Irwin (Elise) Santiago of Lawa‘i, daughter Ronette Santiago of Hanapepe, brothers Ira (Lori) Cockett of Lihu‘e, Philip (Alina) Kekahu of Romania, sisters La-Plane (Pauly) Valmoja of Hanama‘ulu, Karen Philbrook of Sacramento, California, Sharon Kekahu of O‘ahu, Bobbie Peahu of Arizona, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, Oct. 22, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by service. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.
