LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High and Waimea High air-rifle teams were winners Saturday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air rifle matches that took place at Island School campus in Puhi and Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
Shooting agains Island School, the Kaua‘i High boys, all marksmen recording scores over 200, outdistanced the Voyager boys with a team total 1,871 points to the Voyagers’ 1,415 points.
The Red Raider boys were paced by Jacob Andres, who posted the day’s best score at 256 points. The overall total was attained by Andres marking 93 points in the prone position, 77 points in the standing position and 86 points in the kneeling position.
Top score for the Island School boys belonged to Gabriel Kelley, who marked a 221 total.
For the girls, Caylee Garma, scoring 223 points, led the Kaua‘i High wahine to a 1,153-to-1,171 margin over the Island School girls. Top shooter honors for the Voyagers was Kaili Kaui, who ended with a score of 223 on the outdoor range.
Ella Anderson of the Kapa‘a High girls finished with one of the top scores for the girls, 251 toward the Lady Warriors team effort that could not surpass the Lady Menehune shooters. Kapa‘a’s girls fell to the Menehune, 1,832 to 1,066.
Lee Ann A. Saniatan had the day’s high-point honors, edging Anderson’s efforts at 253 to 251. Saniatan recorded a 78 in the standing position, tying fellow Menehune Kaye Marie Alvarez.
For the boys in the Kapa‘a gym, the Warriors could only field four marksmen who totalled 780 points to Waimea’s 1,682.
Fredy Padamada led the Menehune win on 238 points, while Mark Agacoili paced the Warriors with 237 points.
The KIF air-rifle matches continue Friday when Kaua‘i High travels to the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a and Island School hosts the Waimea High teams at its outdoor range. The first shots go off starting at 4 p.m. at both sites.
