PUHI — Kaua‘i High School runner Emma Burgess broke the 20-minute mark by eight seconds Saturday, and on the boys’ course, Brennen Corregedore was 15 ticks over breaking the 17-minute mark during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country (5,000-meter) races held over the Island School course that just the day before hosted the middle-school cross-country championships presented by Run Club Kaua‘i.
The top finishes in both races led the Kaua‘i High girls team to 25 points and the top spot, while on the boys’ course Corregedore’s top finish led the Red Raider boys team to 25 points and the top spot.
Waimea High’s girls, led by Hope Newton’s seventh overall finish at 23:50.72, finished second in team placement with 43 points. Kapa‘a High’s girls, led by Gwyneth Adams’ fifth overall finish at 23:24.25, finished with 55 points for third place.
Lukas Myers of Island School finished third overall in the boys race at 18:13.46 to lead the Voyagers to a second-place team finish with 58 points. Waimea High’s boys, with its second scoring runners getting a nice cluster at 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th places overall, earned third place with 67 points, followed by Kapa‘a getting 89 points and a fourth-place team finish.
The team finishes were pleasing to the Waimea High School coaching team, who noted the advances in scoring, especially in the girls’ standings, from the start of the season that included the invitational race at Island School where the outcome was impacted by the addition of three additional high-school teams.
The next KIF cross-country races will be hosted by Kaua‘i High School at a course set up on the Kaua‘i Community College campus Saturday when the first race gets underway at 4 p.m.
