HANAPEPE — Time is running out to commit to and register for a four-week la‘au lapa‘au training, focusing on that traditional Hawaiian healing art.
“This class has been a popular request from many people,” said Gerald Hirata of the Hanapepe Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji, where the classes will be held.
“However, because of scheduling, and we need a minimum of 20 people to get the classes going, we need people to commit (it’s not just a one- or two-week commitment) so we can move forward.”
La‘au lapa‘au classes are scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 1, 15, 29 and Nov. 12 at the temple.
A huaka‘i excursion to Koke‘e is part of the program, with a date to be determined. There is a registration fee of $100 to cover all four classes.
The first class, to be taught by Sean Chun, a traditional Hawaiian practitioner and cultural specialist, and Ho‘ola Lahui Hawai‘i, will cover traditional Hawaiian healing philosophies and practices and protocols.
The second class will cover making a poultice with herbs found near by, and tea and herbal juice concoctions.
Herbal treatment for a na‘au cleanse, or colon cleanse, and lung cleanse, are the topics for the third meeting, on Oct. 29.
The series wraps up with the fourth class that deals with a herbal cleanse for liver and kidney disease, and other treatments.
Hirata said he personally took classes from Chun while he was at Kaua‘i Community College.
Chun presented a lot of information, much of which Hirata currently utilizes, HIrata said.
