LIHU‘E — The start of the ‘Ai Pono Kaua‘i Challenge — a week-long event that encourages participants to eat locally sourced foods — is fast approaching.
The challenge, organized by the Hawai‘i Alliance for Progressive Action, encourages participants around Kaua‘i to find local ingredients and options for ‘ai pono meals.
Participants can source from local producers, their own backyards, or by visiting locally sourced partner restaurants.
“By participating in this eat-local challenge, we can inspire one another to learn about our local options while supporting our neighbors and small local businesses,” states a HAPA press release.
”In the process, we can create new habits that support our community, sustainability, the environment and our own health. We’ll be doing all this while transforming our food system and diversifying our economy away from tourism,” the release reads.
In order to be eligible for prizes, participants are encouraged to follow the scavenger-hunt card.
Seven winners will be eligible for discounts, gift cards, food, sweets, drinks, merchandise, art, stickers, books, grow kits, hotel pool passes and more.
“‘Ai pono” means, literally, “to eat or nourish” (‘ai) “with balance, harmony, ease and in perfect wholeness” (pono).
