WAIMEA — Kaua‘i High School won both the boys and girls races Saturday when the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation presented its first cross country meet hosted by Waimea High School at its course set up on the Menehune campus and the neighboring athletic field.
Raider Brennen Corregedore set the pace for the boys race, crossing first on a 3-mile run that stopped the clocks at 18 minutes, 43.39 seconds.
He was the first of the top two overall runners from the 76-runner field that crossed the line wearing the Kaua‘i High School red to lead the Red Raider boys to 21 points and the meet.
Kaua‘i also placed the five team scoring runners in the top eight finishers position.
Island School, led by Lukas Myers finishing third overall on a 19:47.24 run, finished in second place with 59 points. Waimea High School, with a high turnout of more than 30 runners, finished in third place with 62 points when the first blue shirt, Cedric Crampton-Naba, set the Waimea pace in fifth place overall with a 20:51.38 run.
The Kapa‘a boys finished fourth with 102 points after its top finisher, Azure Seals crossed the line in 10th place overall on a 21:39.04 run.
In the girls’ race, Kaua‘i High School’s Emma Burgess recovered sufficiently from her injury that sidelined her at the Kaua‘i Half Marathon to lead the first three overall finishers — all Kaua‘i High School runners — with a run that nudged the 20-minute mark at 20:58.96. Burgess topped the 36-girl runner field and led the Kaua‘i girls to 22 points for first-place honors.
Sage Hofmann of Kapa‘a stopped the clocks with a 25:40.28 run in seventh place overall to lead the Lady Warriors to 49 points for second place, just four points ahead of Waimea High School, which finished with 53 points.
Hope Newton, with her large corps of supporters, finished ahead of Hofmann in sixth place overall on a 25:29.56 run, placing the Waimea girls ahead of Kapa‘a in scoring.
But Kapa‘a’s second runner, Gwyneth Adams (25:59.00) finished in eighth place to regain the Warrior lead and the race when Waimea’s second runner, Canyon Niccore, who also had a strong supportive fan base, crossed the line in 12th place overall on a 26:07.92 run.
Island School will host the second race of the KIF cross country season Saturday on its Puhi campus course, with the first race starting at 7:30 a.m.
The Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state cross country races will be hosted by the KIF at Island School Oct. 29.
