HONOLULU — “Kaua‘i came to win, and so it did,” said Troy Morikawa, owner of Troy’s, located across Kuhio Highway from McDonald’s Lihu‘e.
During the Labor Day weekend, Morikawa closed Troy’s to allow the participation of more than 20 staff, and dart league members to play in the annual Leisure Games Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i Classic 2022 dart tournament that was held at Hawaiian Brian’s, located just down the road from the Ala Moana Hotel on O‘ahu.
“This is one of the largest showings from Kaua‘i, and we came to win and take another championship trophy,” Morikawa said of the championship trophy he won during a previous tournament. “Wearing specialty dart shirts donated by Troy himself, the players made a big statement in both play and island representation. Following three days of play, nearly every one of the players placed with the top honors and championship going to Darryl Maeda to bring back to Kaua‘i.”
Michelle Emura, one of the Kaua‘i delegates to the tournament, said this was a super exciting event.
“We have lots of sports here on Kaua‘i, and a lot of people don’t know about this,” Emura said.
Darts is a game of all ages and skill levels, Morikawa said.
“This is the simplest of games,” according to The Rules of Darts on the Masters of Games website. “Each player starts with a score of 501 and takes turns throwing three darts in turn. The score for each turn is calculated and deducted from the player’s total. Bullseye scores 50, the outer ring scores 25, and a dart in the ‘double’ or ‘treble’ ring counts double or treble the segment score.”
To win, a player needs to reach zero before an opponent.
Troy’s invites locals and visitors alike to come try on any of the six boards at the sports bar in the Lihu‘e Town Center that is open seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Guests may also watch a football game, or two, sing a song, or just come to party with some of the lowest-priced beverages on the island.
