LIHU‘E — A Puhi man was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with committing assault with a hammer.
Prosecutors allege that Troy Kopps, a 27-year-old homeless man residing near Lihu‘e, attacked, injured and threatened a woman Sunday.
Kopps appeared in the Lihu‘e Fifth Circuit Court Thursday morning where he entered a not guilty plea.
At the hearing, the Public Defender’s Office informed the court of a conflict of interest — the complainant is a former client of the Office of the Public Defender — and a private counsel was appointed.
Kopps was issued a stay-away order from the victim and three potential state witnesses.
He is being held on $10,000 bail.

At least he has housing now.
This report is a little vague but we shouldn’t be surprised that reports similar to this will be on the increase. Who knows what motivated this man but I hope the offender didn’t do this just to get housing, which he has now.
