HANAMA‘ULU — Surfrider Foundation Kaua‘i is sponsoring a marine-debris cleanup at Nukoli‘i Beach on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as part of global International Coastal Cleanup Day. All are encouraged to attend.
International Coastal Cleanup Day encourages people to protect the oceans by cleaning up beaches and coastlines around the world.
Data is collected on how much and what types of debris is picked up, which will be reported at the International Marine Debris Conference in Korea later this month. In the past, scientists have used Surfrider Kaua‘i data, collected between 2013 and 2022, to track the path of the North Pacific Gyre.
Although the gyre appears to be moving north, Surfrider Kaua‘i’s Net Patrol teams are still removing an average of 4,000 pounds of debris per month from the Kaua‘i coastline.
This event is appropriate for all ages and skill levels. To participate, volunteers are asked to arrive at Nukoli‘i Beach between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and meet at the Surfrider table. All tools — gloves, buckets and data-collection supplies — will be provided. Volunteers are recommended to bring a reusable water bottles.
Those with questions on participation can contact Marie at 808-372-1685.
Prior to arrival, volunteers are asked to fill out the participation waiver at: tgilinks.com/3eR6oK9
Surfrider gives special thanks to the following organizations that will be sending cleanup crews and/or promoting the event: Rotary Clubs of Kaua‘i, Girl Scouts of Kaua‘i, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kaua‘i, Oceanfront Realty, The Cliffs at Princeville and 1 Hotel at Hanalei Bay.
