LIHU‘E — Waimea High and Kaua‘i High air-rifle teams swept their respective series Saturday to open the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season.
Island School traveled to the Waimea High range on the JROTC campus, where the Voyagers came up short, dropping the boys competition to Waimea, 963 to 1,100 points, and the Voyager wahine being outscored by the Menehune ladies, 1,045 to 1,207 points, based on the scores of the top five shooters from each school.
Menehune Fredy P. and Beau F. (this is the Waimea IDs) tied with 231 points each to lead the Waimea win while Gabriel K topped the Voyager shooting with 227 points. Overall, the Menehune boys finished with 1,651 points to Island School’s 1,146 points.
On the girls range, Trislyn M. topped the Waimea girls with 257 points while Emily D. with 234 points was amopng the top five for Island School. Overall, the Waimea girls finished with 1,833 points to the Island School girls’ 1,521 points.
Over at Kaua‘i High, the host Red Raiders took both ends of their series against Kapa‘a, the Kaua‘i boys outpointing the Warriors, 1,227 to 684 points, and the Red Raider ladies getting by Kapa‘a girls, 1,171 to 839 points.
Jordan Andres topped the Kaua‘i scoring on 251 points while Kainoa Danner’s high score of 196 points led the Kapa‘a squad that fell one short of the minimum five needed for team scoring. Overall, Kaua‘i boys finished with 1,894 points, the best performance of the day.
On the girls’ range at the Kaua‘i High facility, Fancy Butac-Sagucio marked 249 points to lead the Kaua‘i scoring. Overall, Kaua‘i girls finished with 1,572 points. Kapa‘a girls saw Ella Anderson lead the Warrior wahine with 247 points in the effort where Kapa‘a fielded just four girls, one short of the five-member team showing.
This Saturday should be interesting when both winners — Kaua‘i and Waimea high schools — meet at the Kaua‘i High facility starting at 10 a.m. The second series will have Kapa‘a traveling to Island School for a match against the Voyagers, also starting at 10 a.m.
