LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School coach Kevin Gusman was concerned about his girls’ bowling team winning at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation match 2 at the Kaua‘i Bowl in the Rice Shopping Center.
“These are the same girls that won the KIF last year,” Gusman said. “They went on to finish No. 6 at the state tournament. They have to win to keep the legacy going.”
The Kapa‘a girls and the Kaua‘i boys each picked up their second wins during their second outing Thursday.
Skye Tadani, rolling the only 200-game for the girls’ field, led the Kapa‘a wahine that finished with a team total 2,270 pinfall over the efforts of the Menehune girls who ended with an 1,841 pinfall, and the Kaua‘i girls that finished with a 1,689 pinfall behind the high games of Mackenzye Palalay-Mariano (120-138-117) and Kaori Koerte (107-116-124).
Waimea’s Irish Oriente continued to lead the Menehune on a high roll of 183, 148 and 138.
On the boys’ lanes, Kaua‘i High School boys, defending KIF champions, finished first on a 2,766 pinfall, led by the high roll from Kaikoa Carvalho-Ki‘ilau, who netted scores of 223, 204 and 202 over three matches.
The Waimea boys, garbed in new uniforms that came in time for the second KIF match, finished with a 1,932 team pinfall, led by Jericho Gudoy’s high rolls of 174, 180 and 169.
Kapa‘a boys, whom Gusman described as “a young team,” rounded out the leaderboard with a 1,605 team pinfall behind the high roll of Anucha Kawamura that included rolls of 131, 128 and 133 over three matches.
KIF bowling continues Thursday at the Kaua‘i Bowl when the teams roll their first balls starting at 4 p.m.
