LIHU‘E — A 52-year-old Lawa‘i man is in critical condition after being involved in multiple traffic crashes late Friday evening.

The identity of the man has not been released.
According to preliminary reports, shortly after 11:15 p.m., Kaua‘i Police Department dispatch received a report of a white Toyota SUV heading westbound on Kaumuali‘i Highway, striking a vehicle near the Kaua‘i Humane Society, and fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported for the driver who was hit.
Shortly after, the white Toyota SUV rear-ended a silver Toyota pickup west of Halfway Bridge and continued west. No injuries were reported for the driver of the Toyota pickup.
The white Toyota SUV later struck a silver Nissan sedan operated by a 34-year-old driver with a 3-year-old passenger. The occupants of the Nissan sedan were treated for non-life threatening injuries and later released from Wilcox Medical Center.
The white Toyota SUV later came to rest on its side on the eastbound guardrail. The 52-year-old driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition.
Kaumuali‘i Highway near Halfway Bridge was closed for approximately three hours.
The cause of the crashes continue to be investigated by the KPD Traffic Safety Unit, but a preliminary report indicates that alcohol and speed may have been factors.
