LIHU‘E — Sandy Takaezu said Dorothy Higuchi’s birthday was actually on Aug. 17, but she wanted to delay the observance for a few days because she really wanted to eat at the Kiibo’s restaurant.
Higuchi celebrated her 103rd birthday Wednesday with a group of about two dozen of her family and close friends that allowed the birthday matriarch to reserve the restaurant’s First Seating, enjoying a nice Japanese dinner topped with ice cream to go along with the special birthday cake.
Takaezu said Dorothy was born in Koloa on Aug. 17, 1919.
“She worked for a dentist, Dr. Smith, whose office was located on Rice Street,” Takaezu said. “After that, she worked at The Garden Island newspaper with Takeshi Gokan before going to work at Kress Store.”
Dorothy finished her working career with the Sears store before retiring around 1965.
“She also did volunteer work with the Blood Bank of Hawai‘i, and the Wilcox Hospital long after she retired,” Takaezu said.
