LIHU‘E — A silver Mercedes crashed through a wall at Gather Federal Credit Union in Lihu‘e Tuesday.
At 1:20 p.m., large chunks of debris from the wall were still strewn over the lower level of the Gather Federal Credit Union parking lot.
The driver, who preferred not to be identified, reported that he had been recycling, when a bottle got caught under his brake pedal.
“The more I pressed on the brake the more it felt like the car was accelerating,” he said.
Though other sections of the wall have concrete barriers to protect the wall, the space he accelerated through didn’t have any.
“There was no stopping the car,” he said.
The driver reported that he had no injuries other than a sore back.
The car was reportedly still drivable, though it was in need of significant repairs.
