WAIKOKO — The state Department of Transportation reported that intermittent closures on Kuhio Highway will occur in both directions in Waikoko today between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. for rock-scaling and slope-inspection work following a Monday rockfall.
WAIKOKO — The state Department of Transportation reported that intermittent closures on Kuhio Highway will occur in both directions in Waikoko today between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. for rock-scaling and slope-inspection work following a Monday rockfall.
Drivers can expect delays of between 15 and 20 minutes.
The DOT Highways Division and Kaua‘i Police Department dispatched crews in response to the rockfall Monday afternoon.
Pictures posted to social media around 2 p.m. show several boulders, one of which appears to be several feet tall and wide, blocking the highway.
DOT Public Information Officer Shelly Kunishige reported that slope-stabilization efforts had recently taken place in this area of the North Shore to mitigate these sorts of rockfall events.
