LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i emerging and established artists are reminded that applications for the 2022 Hawai‘i Craftsmen statewide exhibition will be available Aug. 1 through 15 online only at hawaiicraftsmen.org.
Artists living in Hawai‘i are invited to enter traditional or non-traditional crafts. the show is open to residents of Hawai‘i in the categories of clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone and mixed media.
Entries must be of original design and created within the past two years. Certain works, including those previously exhibited at the Downtown Art Center, Schaefer International Gallery or in any juried exhibitions on O‘ahu or Maui, are not eligible.
The show juror, Neida Bangerter, director of the Shaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts &Cultural Center, will visit all the islands for intake days, and select any works to be included in the exhibition.
The Kaua‘i intake day is Friday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kapa‘a Jodo Mission, 4524 Haua‘ala Road. Following the jurying period, artists can pick up their work from 4 to 5 p.m. Bangerter makes her presentation at 5 p.m.
Shannon Hiramoto, an artisan who runs Machine Machine, chairs the Kaua‘i jurying, and said her responsibility is to help with the process for any artists wanting to participate in this year’s exhibition.
The 2022 exhibition will travel from O‘ahu to Maui in partnership with the Maui Arts &Cultural Center, states the Hawai‘i Craftsmen website. The exhibition will start at the Downtown Art Center in Honolulu Sept. 17 to Oct. 15, then to Maui from Nov. 8 through Dec. 23.
Chosen artists will be vying for more than $11,000 in awards that will be designated by Bangerter. The 17 awards include The Thurston Twigg-Smith Best in Show Award that earns $3,000, sponsored by Sharon Twigg-Smith, and The Garden Island Arts Council Annual Artist Award.
According to Hiramoto, last year’s Hawai‘i Craftsmen exhibition yielded several Kaua‘i winners, including Abigail Boroughs, who earned the GIAC Annual Artist Award. Marta Whitlock earned the Merit Award in Metal Arts, and Natasha Young captured the Merit Award in Fiber Arts for her “Rooster Feather Cape.”
