KIUC Charitable Foundation gives to two local nonprofits

LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Island Utilities Cooperative Charitable Foundation released $5,000 to Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity and $5,000 to Catholic Charities Hawai‘i to help qualified low-income electricity users with their electric bills.

The program began in September 2008 with an agreement with KEO, and expanded in 2021 with CCH, and has continued to help the community. Since, the foundation donated more than $182,000.

“We hope that these funds will continue helping those in need,” said KIUC Charitable Foundation President Teofilo Phil Tacbian, a KIUC board member.

In 2005 then-Gov. Linda Lingle signed legislation enabling KIUC to keep and use for charitable purposes unclaimed refunds that would have previously been turned over to the state for its use. None of these funds come from KIUC assets.

The KIUC Charitable Foundation is a 501c3 organization and is governed by a board of directors, comprised of KIUC directors, KIUC employees and community members.
