HONOLULU — After the state Legislature passed a joint resolution in support of establishing a Hawai‘i State Poet Laureate Program, the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawai‘i State Public Library System have been working together to get the program up and running, with the goal of announcing a new Hawai‘i state poet laureate in 2023.
HONOLULU — After the state Legislature passed a joint resolution in support of establishing a Hawai‘i State Poet Laureate Program, the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawai‘i State Public Library System have been working together to get the program up and running, with the goal of announcing a new Hawai‘i state poet laureate in 2023.
This position will help build and sustain a literary community that connects the islands, their stories and people. It will raise support for work that will make poetry accessible to more communities throughout Hawai‘i.
Nominations are open now through Aug. 20.
Included in this new program is a $20,000 stipend for the poet laureate, providing more tools for facilitating broader support to a wider community by offering poetry workshops throughout the islands and collaborating with Hawai‘i’s rich and vibrant literary community to bring attention to Hawai‘i’s diverse voices and stories.
