Kudos to General ManagerIke Cockett and the Hilton Garden Inn Kaua‘i Wailua Bay ‘ohana for coming up with 70 rooms to house 120 Tropic Care Kaua‘i (have you gone to see them?) military medical professionals, after Jaye Gayagas-Youn of the Sheraton Kaua‘i Coconut Beach Resort said the Waipouli resort did not have enough space.
Lt. Chris Park and Lt. Col. Andrew Adamich of the U.S. Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training command said they were considering camping out the 100-plus people at the Kapa‘a Beach Park if they couldn’t find rooms. Great example of working together, said state Rep. Jimmy Tokioka!
U.S. Navy HM2 Rajiv Lamichhane at the Tropic Care Kaua‘i (mahalo, Blanca Gil of the state Department of Health — she was supposed to be at the Kilauea School mobile clinic! — for coordinating the visit for DOH Kaua‘i District Health Officer Dr. Janet Berreman!) ‘Ele‘ele School clinic (Tropic Care Commander Col. Scott Olech said they got to grind the baked ono from Bobby’s on their visit there) is from Nepal, which is a lot like Hawai‘i except there’s no beaches.
And, on the Westside, a couple of grandmas from the ‘Ele‘ele clinic were going to check out the Celebrate the Spirit of Obon festival at the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji that’s open from “noon to dusk” through Sunday evening.
Nothing beats homemade treats, and the Alfred Darling chili is pretty good when, like Maureen and Roy Miyashiro discovered, you put the hot dog on top. All the flavors and fun of bon dance are present, just no dancing. And Gerald Hirata said the bon-dance foods like flying saucers, nishime and shoyu chicken aren’t served until 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday!
