NAWILIWILI — Members of the Live Poets’ Society of Kaua‘i have been invited to perform original poems in the “Spoken Word” segment of the upcoming Kaua‘i Arts Festival.
The public is invited to come and enjoy them, along with hula oli and mele performed by dancers of Ka ‘Imi Institute Kaua‘i schools on Monday, June 20, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., on the festival’s open-air stage.
LPS members focusing on the tradition of the bard as wordsmith/storyteller will be Steve Backinoff, poet and emcee for the evening, with Vigil Akana, Dawn Kawahara, poet/writer and founder of the LPS; Cheryl Ann Farrell, Chad Aaron Long, Nicole Street, Donna Waidtlow and Loya Whitmer (aka “Rose Seaquill”).
Joining the group will be Ka ‘Imi Institute Westside teacher Joanne “Kealamai” Parongao and dancers with a hula presentation focused on Hawaiian forest birds, a timely subject because of their heightened endangerment due to climate-change factors.
Also joining will be John Mills, Kimie Sadoyama, Rachel Secretario and a special guest.
The festival featuring many performers will run from June 17 through 26 in the area of Nawiliwili Bay, corner of Nawiliwili and Wa‘apa roads.
The KAF is the annual fundraiser for Eyes Wide Open Multimedia Outreach nonprofit program.
