LIHU‘E — This was a memorable weekend for Isaiah and Ashley Ulanday of Paradise Grinds on Lala Road in Lihu‘e.
Not only did Isaiah and Ashley celebrate the graduation of their daughter Isley Ulanday from Waimea High School, the Paradise Grinds couple presented nearly $3,000 in scholarships to four recipients, representing at least one recipient from each of the public high schools.
“We’ve always helped the community,” Ashley Ulanday said. “We’ve helped people fighting cancer, medical issues and more. For the first time, we decided we would try and get a scholarship to at least one student from each school.”
Utilizing the help of a scholarship committee established by the Ulanday family, four recipients were selected from a field of nearly 30 applicants.
The first recipients of the Paradise Grinds scholarships include Joseph Sams, one of the seven valedictorians from Waimea High School’s Class of 2022, and Shyann Freitas, whom Ashley Ulanday described as being very helpful during the days when they needed help.
Tyler Tanaka, graduating with the Kapa‘a High School Class of 2022 in the Friday night downpour, is the recipient from Kapa‘a, and Zoe Carvalho, also graduating with the Class of 2022 in the Vidinha Stadium rains, represents Kaua‘i High School.
