LIHU‘E — Office Depot Manager Mario Alaniz said he is not sure how Kumu’s Cupboard is going to distribute the moving white board or the riser computer desks that were included among the approximately $4,000 in school supplies delivered for Teacher Appreciation Week.
“The moving white board and the desks are from Office Depot,” Alaniz said. “The other supplies were donated by Office Depot shoppers as part of Teacher Appreciation Week.”
Kumu’s Cupboard, a teachers’ resource facility in the Kukui Marketplace near the Target store, served as the collection point for the second time as organizations wanting to acknowledge educators’ efforts on Teacher Appreciation Day dropped off school supplies and other material for teachers to get during their individual shopping trips.
“This was a last-minute thing,” said Janice Sajonia of Office Depot. “We set up a box on the retail floor and shoppers just put in what they wanted to give to teachers for Teacher Appreciation Day. This was collected in just one week.”
Elyse Litvack, one of the Kumu’s Cupboard founders and its president, said she is grateful for any donations from individuals, companies or organizations. “We take anything,” Litvack said. “Whatever is here for the teachers is something teachers don’t have to pay for.”
Kumu’s Cupboard, a nonprofit that provides free school supplies and resources to teachers and other educational staff of Kaua‘i’s schools, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.
