Lihu‘e Senior Center opened its doors in the middle of last month at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center with its installation of officers. From left are Marian Ogata, sergeant at-arms; Carolyn Morinishi, secretary, librarian and auditor; Flora Visitacion, sergeant at-arms; Char Ono, vice president; Pamela Jardin, president; Mary Alejo, sergeant at-arms; Sumako Ichimasa, assistant treasurer; Lynn Kudo, treasurer; and Jovita Valdez, sergeant at-arms. The center program is under the county Department of Parks & Recreation, with nine centers across the island. COVID-19 closed down all the centers in 2020. The Lihu‘e Senior Center welcomes new and returning seniors over the age of 55. The Lihu‘e Senior Center has programs the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m., including pledge of allegiance, center song and meeting agendas. The officers schedule movies, dances, birthday celebrations, bingo, singing and much more.

Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Lifeguard Chief Kalani Vierra points out hazards to visitors using the newly-installed ocean safety sign, Thursday at the Lumahai River mouth. The new signage was paid for by the family of the late Dr. Jamie Zimmerman who suffered a drowning accident at the Lumahai River mouth in 2015.
