‘ELE‘ELE — There is only a two-hour window to get the sweet onion seedlings this Saturday in front of the Gather Federal Credit Union branch in the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center.
“We’re going to be there from 6:30 a.m. Saturday,” said Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes, who will be distributing the seedlings. “Carmila Udarbe, there’s no school on Saturdays, will be there, but she needs to leave for a basketball game in Kalaheo so everything will be done by 8:30 a.m.” These onion seedlings were grown by Corteva Agriscience in their greenhouses on the Westside.
“This is the same batch as the ones we distributed Friday during the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Mother’s Day orchid and plant sale,” Fuertes said. “We moved a lot of yellows, and the reds are sold out. Right now, we have about 60 batches of transplants.” Donations will benefit the Udarbe children — either Carmila’s college fund, or her brother Anthony’s upcoming Washington, DC trip for leadership camp with other Waimea Canyon Middle School students.
