Girl Scout cookies may now be a memory until next year’s sales roll around.
For leader Cheryl Lum (formerly Stiglmeier) and the scouts from Girl Scout Troop 008, the girls were able to support rescue animals with $6,000 of their hard-earned cookie sales funds.
“The scouts sponsored three kennels at $1,500 each at the Kaua‘i Humane Society,” Lum said. “Additionally, they spent $1,500 at Natural Pet Hawai‘i to donate supplies and food for the rescue animals at KHS.”
Lum said sponsoring kennels at KHS pays for every animal that resides in that particular kennel for an entire year. The scouts chose to sponsor one kitten kennel and two dog kennels.
“If you supported these girls with cookie sales, or in any other way, thank you,” Lum said. “Thank you for supporting these girls while they learned and refined many skills like customer service, market analysis, money skills, calculations, product knowledge, teamwork, camaraderie and more. Today, they practiced budgeting and smart shopping. All of this happened while the scouts were working toward their goal of helping these rescue animals.”
Lum said that, as a troop, the girls expressed their love for animals, many sharing that they want careers in helping animals.
“While they cannot be veterinarians right now, they knew that they could help support rescue animals now,” Lum said. “The girls decided to sponsor kennels at the Kaua‘i Humane Society because a one-time donation now supports every animal that goes into the sponsored kennels for an entire year.”
The food and supplies donation was “just to get animals through the day,” Lum said. “But the sponsorship helped with vaccinations, food, bedding, toys and care for the year.”
“If you supported the girls in any way, you were a part of this,” Lum said. “Thank you to these girls for their hard work, grit and forward thinking.”
