PUHI — Ryan Pawsling, Moloa‘a Mike No. 9 and Squishy await your arrival at the Kaua‘i Humane Society this week, when pet adoption fees are reduced to $0 and $25.
The two cats and dog are three of the nearly 200 animals now housed at the nonprofit fronting Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi. The reduced-fee adoption period, running May 2 to May 15, is part of the nonprofit Bissell Pet Foundation’s annual national “Empty the Shelters” event.
These initiatives are a great help to shelters, according to KHS Executive Director Nicole Schafer Crane.
“Where populations are really high, they’ll come forward and offer an event to to assist the shelters, to help them clear some animals to make space,” she said.
Last September, KHS flew nearly 200 animals to Seattle due to overcrowding.
Cats, dogs, puppies and kittens may be adopted for $25 during Empty the Shelters. Senior pets — cats and dogs more than 7 years old — may be adopted for free.
The KHS’ standard rates are $50 for adult animals, $25 for seniors and $100 for puppies and kittens. All are spayed or neutered, and come with up-to-date vaccines, dewormers, flea-and-tick preventatives and microchips.
KHS is one of more than 275 participating shelters in 45 states and Canada, a Bissell Pet Foundation press release states.
The nonprofit claims its Empty the Shelter event has helped 83,055 pets across the U.S. and Canada find homes since its inception in 2016.
“We’re doing several free cat spay/neuter clinics, along with our usual low-cost spay/neuter clinics” in May, she said.
