LIHU‘E — David Chung of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center said the April collection at the Kaua‘i Resource Center was a tad slower than usual.
“It’s hard when you overbook containers,” Chung said. “This month, we only ordered two containers, the last of which was filled up, this morning. We’re starting on the overflow, now.”
By noon, nearly four hours after opening, Chung noted more than 120 cars being processed.
Shantelle Rego of the county’s Department of Solid Waste office felt the collection Friday was on par with about two, or three containers being shipped out. The goal of Solid Waste is to not have an overflow with everything collected being sent out.
“This is May Day weekend,” Chung said. “I didn’t think there would be that many people bringing things by.”
The next Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center collection will take place on May 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Resource Center.
During this time, residents, businesses, and other organizations are able to bring in unwanted or unneeded items for reuse, including clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books and shoes. Clothing and textiles do not need to be in good condition. Torn or stained clothing is OK.
However, people are asked not to bring eWaste, chemical, appliances, or broken item.
Due to the health and safety concerns due to heavy equipment in the area, and to reduce the chance of injury to customers unloading heavy items, the Salvation Army is requesting that the public remain in their vehicle while at the Kaua‘i Resource Center.
People are reminded to check with local thrift stores to see if they are capable of taking donations before bringing items to the Kaua‘i Resource Center.
The ARC offers pick up services to thrift stores and businesses. Please call 808 241 4336 for new service. Residents who need home pick up services can contact the Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore at 808 335-6105, or RP’s Random Closet at 808 346-0020.
