KEALIA — A young girl in distress in waters off Paliku Beach, also known as Donkey Beach, was rescued by a bystander and lifeguards on Wednesday morning.
The 13-year-old female visitor was playing in the water near the shore when she was swept out into the ocean, a county spokesperson told The Garden Island on Friday.
The father of the girl attempted to rescue her with a rescue tube from the beach, but was unable to get past the surf, according to the county spokesperson.
A bystander grabbed another rescue tube and swam out to help the girl The bystander was able to reach the girl and secure the rescue tube around her.
When lifeguards, dispatched at approximately 9:30 a.m., arrived on scene they swam out and further assisted the girl to shore.
“She was brought to the parking lot where awaiting medics assessed her for injuries,” the county spokesperson said in an email. “Her family refused further assistance and she was released at the scene to their care.”
Paliku Beach is not a lifeguarded beach.
