Sgt. 1st Class Minji Hwang (people can also call Ryan Fussell at 808-494-4312) of the U.S. Army said the Army is partnering with Kukui Grove Center in celebrating Teacher Appreciation Day that falls on May 3.
They are collecting school supplies like notebooks, folders, writing supplies like pens and pencils, coloring supplies, dry erase markers, highlighters, glue, scissors, erasers and more during the April 18, 25 and May 2 Pau Hana Markets that start at 3 p.m. at KGC.
The collected supplies will be turned over to Kumu’s Cupboard, a Kaua‘i teacher free resource center, for Teacher Appreciation Day.
“We can’t collect money,” Hwang said. “But the JROTC at Kapa‘a and Waimea high schools can. On May 1, the JROTC will be doing a car wash in the Macy’s parking lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. where teachers can get their cars washed for free. Other vehicles will also be accepted for washing for a donation that will be turned over to Kumu’s Cupboard for Teacher Appreciation Day.”
Chucky Boy Chock (yes, we all miss Coach O! Visitation with his family is Wednesday from 9 a.m. at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Kapaia) of the Kaua‘i Museum (they’re also open longer hours) said the Walter & Irmalee Pomroy Lei Contest is back after the pandemic pause, with sponsorships from Duke’s Kaua‘i, Keoki’s Paradise and Timbers Resort.
The contest is May 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort Lihu‘e grand ballroom, with the Keiki La Lei Contest taking place from 9 to 11 a.m. More details will follow, or for information, call the museum at 808-245-6931.
