LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i chapter of the Surfrider Foundation released its Blue Water Task Force results for the month of March.
Surfrider began its Blue Water Task Force in 2007. It resumed regular testing in February, following a hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The task force samples Kaua‘i rivers, streams and surf breaks for fecal-indicating enterococcus bacteria.
Enterococci bacteria come from warm blooded animals, like humans, cattle, pigs, dogs, cats, rats and birds. Cesspool leakage into the groundwater and thus into the streams is a likely cause of some of the sites’ contamination.
